AYUDH Belgium: Baking homes

2 years ago, the Belgian youth, inspired by the German example, had the idea to start a waffle baking project. It took some effort to get it all organized, but finally, a year later, the first waffle baking project was started at the famous “Meir” shopping street in Antwerp. It was an unexpected success. As waffles were given away for a donation, passers by often felt very generous.

Until now, with almost every baking session to date, we have managed to collect enough money to build at least one home for the poor in India. Since 1999 the Belgian Satsang group has been supporting Amma’s Amrita Kuteeram project, which aims to build 125,000 houses for the poorest in India.
Apart from the waffles we also offer hot chocolate and coffee during the winter and fresh orange-juice in summer. Next time we will try out freshly made mint tea…! We have a tight group of volunteers. On average we need six people to make the dough, bake the waffles, serve the ‘customers’ and prepare the coffee and hot chocolate.
Once in a while someone has to run to the shop to buy more ingredients. Most recently we had our most successful waffle baking day so far: more than 800 members of the public enjoyed our sweet snacks!

We also got a lot of support from the city of Antwerp local council who provided us with free tents, tables, electrical equipment and free electricity. Once they even turned off the Christmas decoration lights so that we would have enough electricity to bake our waffles! People are mostly very enthusiastic and interested in the concept of baking waffles for a good cause.
They enquire about Amma’s charitable projects and are very positive in their response. Now we even have regular customers who return again and again to taste our delicacies!. The great success has made the Belgium AYUDH group very optimistic to continue. The project becomes more and more successful …and ever more fun!
Please note that if you wish to set up a waffle project in your hometown you need to confirm this with the Amma association of your country.
Waffle Recipe: Melt 250 gr. of butter, add 1l of milk to cool it down a little bit, then add 1 kg of flour (self raising), 6 yellegg-yolks, 2 little vanilla sugar bags (or more, as you prefer, but no more than 250 gr.). Blend it well, then add 0.5 l of sparkling water and stir again till it is smooth. In a separate bowl , mi x the egg whites (with a clean mixer) till you can hold the bowl upside down without the egg white falling out, and gently blend it with the rest of the dough, using a wooden spoon. Let’s start the baking!

Hello Annie. We always ask for a donation and it works very well! A lot of times people give more than they would have paid somewhere else… at the same time they get information from us about the project we are supporting and once in a while we have conversations that last for at least half an hour about what we do and what Amma does, …
