AYUDH Spain: Precious Time with the Mentally Challenged
Once a month we go on an outing with members of the Catalan Sports Learning Disabilities Association in Barcelona. They usually have planned a weekend program full of activities, but due to lack of staff they often struggle to conduct them all. So when we contacted this association and offered our help they were so happy.

There are various groups according to the degree of disability. We usually go with the same group every time, so that we can become more familiar with each other. It is always a wonderful experience, because the people have such an open heart. They just need two minutes to tell us their life story, interests and world views.
The activities we undertake together vary from season to season. We usually take advantage of local festivals and cultural events. For example, we attended the Earth Day Fair, the Carnival, the St. Lucy Fair on Christmas. We also enjoy going to museums, to the beach in summer or the mountains in spring.
Sometimes we also go to the cinema or to do sports. We were recently asked to propose some new activities so we came up with the idea of offering meditation and yoga classes for those suffering from learning disabilities. We feel truly blessed to be able to spend these few hours with our friends.

Even apart from our regular meetings some members of the Spanish AYUDH group support and assist them in their every day life. It is a wonderful and inspiring service!
We thank Amma for this lively and joyful seva (selfless service). It really allows us to grow individually and as a group.

I find AYUDH Spain’s attention to disabled people very touching and beautiful. Today I read the nice page “Relaxation for body and mind” on Amritapuri.org. I also have a disabled daughter, 25 years old, and I gently ask you if it’s possible to receive the text of the guided meditation you used to give relaxation to mentally challenged people. I’d like to do the same thing with my daughter. I’ve been Amma’s devotee since last 17 years and I’m in charge of Amma’s books translation into italian. During Amma’s program in Italy I’m also responsible for disabled people’s welcome and cares.
I thank you very much for all you are doing and I hope to receive your answer very soon.
In Amma’s love

Dear Krishna,
I have sent an email to you, replying to your request.
It is nice that this story has inspired you. I am sure that meditation is not only efficient and important for “ordinary” people, but also, and especially, for those who are mentally challenged, helping them to find more inner peace and solitude.
The Spanish AYUDH leader will shortly contact you.
Warm Regards,
Andi
