The international Green Initiative “Growin’- One seed at a time” was launched by AYUDH two years ago. The projects aim is to encourage young people growing their own vegetables as a contribution to environmentalism and a healthy lifestyle. Many members of AYUDH around the world have since taken part in this project enthusiastically – from Australia to Kenya, Europe to India and the USA. Tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes and all kinds of colourful vegetables have been grown on window sills, in gardens and backyards.
In order to introduce the concept of Growin’ more to the public, we have taken part in the competition “Ideas Initiative Future” which selected the best projects on sustainability from all over Germany. The competition is a community project of the “Decade of Education for Sustainability” of the United Nations and the German drugstore chain “dm”.
We were given the opportunity to present the Growin’ project to customers of the “dm” shop in Höchst on the 15^th of January 2010. We had a stall with colourful Growin’ posters and a slide show about Growin’ activities from all over the world. In order to win a financial funding from “dm” we asked the customers to vote for our project by signing a card. Customers who were interested received a paper bag with a Growin’ business card, organic seeds and planting instructions. The customers were enthusiastic about our initiative and many of them voted for our project. For us AYUDH members it was a great joy to have the opportunity spreading the seeds of change a little further.
